Evolution of Queen Victoria’s Silver Coinage & Die Axis Anomalies in the 1885 One Rupee Issue

Alexandrina Victoria, better known to history as Queen Victoria, ascended the British throne in 1837 and reigned as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1901. Spanning more than six decades, her remarkable 63-year reign became one of the defining periods of British history. This era, marked by profound political, industrial, social, and cultural transformation, is widely known as the Victorian Era.

The 1885 One Rupee is known in several varieties, with five principal combinations commonly encountered: AI-C incuse, AI-B raised, AII-B incuse, AII-B raised, and CI-B incuse. During an examination of specimens from my collection, I noticed an intriguing pattern among the AI-C incuse,

In 1885, five major die varieties of the One Rupee silver coin were produced across the Bombay and Calcutta mints:

  1. AI – C Incuse (Obverse AI, Reverse I, Incuse 'C' Mint Mark - Calcutta Mint)
  2. AI – B Raised (Obverse AI, Reverse I, Raised 'B' Mint Mark - Bombay Mint)
  3. AII – B Incuse (Obverse AII, Reverse I, Incuse 'B' Mint Mark - Bombay Mint)
  4. AII – B Raised (Obverse AII, Reverse I, Raised 'B' Mint Mark - Bombay Mint)
  5. CI – B Incuse (Obverse C, Reverse I, Incuse 'B' Mint Mark)

Physical examination of empirical specimens (AI C-Incuse, AI B-Raised, AII B-Incuse, and AII B-Raised) reveals a recurring ~300° rotational die error specific to the AI Obverse group, contrasting with the normal 180° coin alignment found in AII Obverse strikings.

A comparative study of four physical specimens from the author's collection (AI C-Incuse, AI B-Raised, AII B-Incuse, and AII B-Raised) demonstrates a clear distinction in die orientation between AI and AII obverse varieties.

In Specimen 01, Die Axis Observation, shows an obvious rotational error of approximately 30° relative to standard coin alignment. Turning the coin vertically positions the Queen's portrait at a severe off-angle tilt.

In Specimen 02, Die Axis Observation, displays the exact same ~30° rotation error as the C-Incuse specimen, confirming that this rotation is characteristic across different reverse dies paired with AI obverse dies.

In Specimen 03, Die Axis Observation, exhibits standard 180° coin alignment. When turned vertically, the obverse bust stands perfectly upright.

In Specimen 04, Die Axis Observation, exhibits standard 180° coin alignment with zero rotation error.

The ~30° rotation error is not an isolated single-coin upset; it appears consistently across AI obverse varieties, regardless of whether they feature a C-Incuse (Calcutta) or B-Raised (Bombay) reverse die. This pattern strongly implies that the obverse Type AI working dies or the press alignment collar were set incorrectly by approximately 30° clockwise during the early batch runs of 1885. When the mint corrected/re-engraved the obverse bust to Type AII, the alignment issue was rectified, restoring the standard 180° coin orientation for subsequent strikings.
