Albert Edward, better known as King Edward VII , reigned as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Dominions, and Emperor of India from 1901 until his death in 1910 . Although he ascended the throne immediately following the death of Queen Victoria on 22 January 1901 , his coronation did not take place until 9 August 1902 . As the master dies for the new coinage had already been prepared before the coronation ceremony, the portrait of Edward VII on British Indian coins depicts the King without a crown , a distinctive feature that readily differentiates his coinage from those of other British monarchs. The Edward VII One Rupee , struck between 1903 and 1910 , is one of the most extensively studied denominations of British Indian coinage. During the inaugural year of 1903 , production took place at both the Calcutta and Bombay Mints , resulting in several recognised die and mint varieties.
