Counterfeit Rupee of British India in 1901 and 1903
Coinage under the British period in India after 1862 is called imperial issues struck under direct authority of the crown. Imperial issues bear obverse portraits of Queen Victoria from 1862 to 1901, Edward VII from 1903 to 1910, George V from 1911 to 1936 and George VI from 1938 to 1947. It can be noted that, British India coins were not issued during the brief reign of Edward VIII.
I observed
counterfeit Rupee of British India of 1901. Victoria Empress will be at obverse
and ornamental wreath on Indian flower will be at reverse of a Rupee of 1901.
But I found Victoria Queen (as 1840) at obverse and wreath on Indian flower at
reverse but little decay as below photos. Dimension was almost same with a
weight of 11.60g, insignificantly higher than the Rupee of Victoria Queen
(1840). Obverse almost perfectly matches with the Rupee of Victoria Queen
(divided legend, 1840) but reverse does not match perfectly with others minted Rupee
of Victoria Empress, 1901.
I also observed counterfeit Rupee of British India of 1903. Edward VII
(bare head of the king facing right) will be at obverse and Crown ONE RUPEE
INDIA yek rupiya year surrounded by a spray of lotus flora will be at
reverse of a Rupee of 1903. But I found Edward VII (as 1903) at obverse and wreath
on Indian flower on an inner circle at reverse but little decay as below
photos. Dimension was almost same with a weight of 11.46g, insignificantly
higher than the Rupee of Edward VII (1903). Obverse almost perfectly matches
with the Rupee of Edward VII (1903) but reverse does not match with others
minted Rupee of Victoria Empress. There was no circle surrounded by ONE RUPEE
INDIA “date” of the Rupee of Victoria Empress but a circle was observed of this
counterfeit Rupee of British India of 1903.
It can be noted that last Rupee of Victoria Empress was minted on 1901
and first Rupee of Edward VII was minted on
1903. Coincidently abnormal changes found in both of these two dates. It
was quite difficult to mark a coin as fake or real until have some clear evidences.
Obverse of both Rupee matches almost perfectly; but different period of 1901
and same period of 1903.
